What’s a mandala anyway? Mandala, or container of essence, is a circle filled with intricate details. It can be viewed as a form of art therapy, a religious symbol or a means for spiritual practices. Mandala represents unity, wholeness, connection and the circle of life. In our modern world mandala designs are very popular among adult colorists, who find them relaxing, soothing and uplifting. Now, are you ready to create your own mandala coloring page? It’s much easier than you might think!
- Drawing paper
- Compass & Protractor
- Pencil & Eraser
- Adobe Photoshop
- Coloring Supplies
Let’s prepare all our tools. When ready, take your paper and draw a circle with a protractor or a compass. This circle will define the size of your mandala. Draw smaller circles inside if you want to make a more complicated design.
Use a ruler to draw horizontal and vertical lines. With a protractor create 45º marks between those lines. As a result, your circle will be divided into eight parts. You can add more diagonal lines and divide them into more parts for detailed mandala designs. This will help you draw similar patterns inside your mandala.
Start filling in each circle with different elements. You can draw absolutely anything, like flowers, geometrical forms or swirls. Just make sure to keep them as symmetrical as possible. Don’t stress out worrying about perfection. The idea is to get relaxed and enjoy the process. Simply keep adding more and more shapes and lines to your design until you finish with all the circles.
When mandala is complete, redraw it with the liner. We recommend starting your initial drawing with the pencil and just practice a little bit. Later you can always ink your design. During this process, you can add even more details and shapes to your drawing if there are empty spaces. When done, erase the pencil lines. Your mandala is ready! Pretty cool, right?
It’s a great idea to save your design in a digital format. This way you can print and color it multiple times. Just scan your finished mandala, upload it and save to your computer. Use Adobe Photoshop or any other photo editing software to clean up the background.
